Tech Angels

Building Bright Ideas: Can you impress the Tech Angels?

What

A business competition for students and graduates of Salford University, in collaboration with WA:UK Tech Angels, a Greater Manchester based start-up accelerator and angel investment organisation. Tech Angels are part of the Web Applications UK group of companies, with support from an award-winning software house.

Entrants must provide a proposal for investment in a tech start-up, founded by themselves.
Explicitly, Tech Angels are looking for a proposal that demonstrates a viable IT business with a low cost of entry, evidence of sound market research, and crucially an innovative idea with the ‘wow’ factor. However, the personality of the founder/co-founders is also an integral part of the final decision – this is something that will come through on the final pitch and will be covered in a pitching workshop.

The start-ups with the six most impressive ideas will be invited to pitch live to the Tech Angels board at the Creative Entrepreneur Event 2016 at MediaCityUK, competing for prizes of £1,000, £300, and £200 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Who

All students and alumni of Salford University can participate, but 3rd years and graduates in particular are encouraged. Teams of up to 4 or individuals can enter the contest. The competition is open to students and graduates in all subject areas so you do not need to be a digital technologies expert, but have a good understanding of the technologies needed to get your idea off the ground.

How

Using the entry form provided by Salford University, proposals must be submitted by 9 November 2016 deadline, with an optional first-draft submission for direct, 1-2-1 feedback from the WA:UK Chief Executive before the 19 October 2016.

The 6 short-listed finalists will have a 5 minute slot to pitch their idea, after which time they will answer questions posed to them by the board, university staff and other industry experts.  Please visit   Creative Entrepreneur – Next Generation event, www.CreativeEnt.co.uk for more information.

To enter participants must:

  • Be a University of Salford current student (preferably graduating in 2016) or graduate or a team of students/ graduates
  • Have an innovative business idea based in the digital / creative sector
  • Fill in a short expression of interest form outlining their digital business idea by 19th of  October 2016 to receive initial feedback
  • Submit a final application by 9th of November 2016
  • Be available to pitch their idea to a panel of experts on 23th of November 2016
  • Throughout the competition the concept they come up with remains the Intellectual Property of the respective competitors.

Why

Vinejuice the winners of the 2014 competition, are currently taking up office space on the Web Applications UK campus, and receiving seed funding for their business. It’s the ethos of WA:UK Tech Angels to positively impact the tech industry and wider community of Greater Manchester.

Entrants aren’t just participating for money, they are also pitching for the opportunity to get seed funding and the room to grow their business idea. As such, entrants must be encouraged to see their business as the real thing, not just a theoretical proposal for a cash prize (hence 3rd year and alumni being more desirable)

A good representation of the Tech Angels philosophy is the guest blog written by our Chief Executive last year
